It’s Official: Google PageRank Update Time Sets New Record

As of today, it has been 123 days since the last Google Toolbar Pagerank update. The longest time between exports previously was 122 days (Oct 19/2005 to Feb 18/2006). Frustrated bloggers and webmasters have been waiting for weeks for this updated, which was originally slated for the middle of July.

Many people have speculated (or even proposed) that Google could or should stop exporting Toolbar Pagerank altogether. It has been argued that people fixate too much on this single metric of a website’s value, to the exclusion of focusing on good content and overal site development.

Frankly, this argument seems flawed. There are many ways to assess a site’s value, and Google remains the most accurate of the available methods. Technorati can be gamed by a sheer volume of links, while Alexa only reflects a fairly specific user group. Like it or not, the Google PageRank will be buzzworthy news whenever it finally happens.

  1. i am also waitin for that update….good post

    thanx

  2. Well i think Google has updated its PR in first week of August. It was not in a broader way. I had lost the Pr of the link/resource pages of my site http://www.developmentindia.com from Pr-2 to Pr-0. Also, i gain back Pr for few resource pages of my site http://www.mi-travelservices.com.

What I think Google has updated Pr of resource pages but not in the broader way and this is the rare case in Google updation of Pr for Google’s toolbar.

If any one have noticed the same thing please share it with us.

  3. Google is up to something. They are in the middle of cracking down on paid text links and PageRank is a large part of the text link business.

  4. @Vincent: I have heard scattered stories of a partial update, but no page I know of personally or run has updated since March/April.

@Pocket: Yes, I’ve heard some of that too … that they’re having more issues and trying to deal with more scammy paid-link schemes. Still, it’s amazing that it has taken this long unless something huge is in the works!

  5. Is Google is going to treat PageRank same as the Supplemental Pages?

  7. Probably not – usually subpages are less valued than a main page, but it all depends. Adding a Google sitemap via webmaster tools will help Google know what pages are valuable or not to you at least.

  8. Alsux, I think we shouldn’t put too much emphasish on how important is to add a Google sitemap for our sites. As the web master is involved in SEO I assume the site created is fully spiderable and then the site map is not so important for ranking or PR. What do you think?

  9. This is madness! lol Someone wake me up when its over… lol

  10. I am waiting impatiently for the update to see what I have done will improve my pagerank. But, there is really nothing we can do about it, is there? We can only wait and hope.

  11. Well, I think a sitemap in and of itself may not be too useful, though one with priority calculations (such as the one provided by the free WordPress Sitemaps plugin) helps Google know what you think is more or less valuable on your site. I also think having a Webmaster account helps Google give you the benefit of the doubt if they find something fishy or otherwise questionable on your site!

  12. I just read on another blog that Google crashed when doing the deep crawls for the next toolbar pr update. Matt Cutts said himself the other day to NOT expect one “in the next few weeks”. I guess it will be October now.
We’ll probably be carving pumkins when we see it.
