StumbleUpon Slowly Overtaking Digg and Reddit?
Reddit has apparently flatlined, and Digg usage has dropped dramatically over the past year. The only one of the three showing growth (doubling usage from a year ago!) is StumbleUpon. Why? It probably has something to do with the fact that StumbleUpon appeals to a broader demographic. It also helps that StumbleUpon doesn’t destroy sites for hours or days with influxes of traffic.
For the page owner of a popular and oft-Stumbled site, StumbleUpon is user-friendly – spreading out hits over time and reducing load. Moreover, StumbleUpon allows for a much more precise selection of interests so that people don’t sift through irrelevant or broad categories to search for what they want. Certainly StumbleUpon has a ways to go before overtaking Digg in terms of users, but if these trends continue that will happen within a year or two at most unless Digg learns a lesson or two from StumbleUpon.

The loss in traffic by Digg is quite surprising though stumbleupon dont seem to be exactly making head away, just consistent traffic, so this analysis of SU’s traffic is more like a very miniscule blip of what is very unlikely to happen, not anything that should warrant a blog post about!

[...] Apparently StumbleUpon has been busy making its mark on a variety of people. You won’t just find bloggers there. Well, as the graph shows (go to Alexa and double-check!) StumbleUpon’s traffic has doubled over the past year – it might not look like a lot on the graph, but 2x is a pretty significant increase! Digg is losing traffic, I think, because people are realizing more and more it just isn’t the democratic system it is supposed to be.

I have to wonder if StumbleUpon’s success is tied to their willingness to feature the “indie hits” of the web… you can find some of the coolest things you’ll never otherwise see just by visiting their trendsetter group. I think it’s called Weird/Bizarre or something like that. But that is its main draw for me, which I think says something.

I am also a big fan of StumbleUpon. I recently decided to perform an analysis of StumbleUpon vs. Digg traffic and, I have to admit, I was quite surprised by what I discovered.
StumbleUpon beat Digg in several areas including bounce rates and pageviews per visit.

Stumbleupon has more of a community feel to it. Digg is souless, the only way to communicate is through the comments, and that is filled with immature wannabes.
